Indoor Championships Finalists

The DSC U12 Boys White finished the Iowa Indoor Championship Tournament as the tournament finalists!  Despite what turned out to be a long weekend, they gave a gutty performance for the ages of which they have not yet seen from themselves until this weekend.

10 of the top teams from across the state would be entered in to this tournament and our boys were looking forward to the challenge of facing off against some of them to see how far their progress has come so far under Coach Steve.  Their first game was against a relative unknown Phantoms team and the boys came out firing on all cylinders, anxious to show for themselves the progress that they have made throughout the winter.  The boys would play near flawless soccer for the whole of the game, controlling the pace and the tempo of the game while holding their shape and playing their positions how they were meant to be played.  While the offense would get plenty of shots on the opposing keeper, the defense worked just has hard and effectively in shutting down any attempt at a counter-attack, putting the team back on the offensive with a great build from the back style type play almost immediately.  A great 9-1 win would put the boys on the right track to a great start to this premier tournament.

Despite a near 6-hour layoff between games on Saturday, the boys were feeling confident after their big win earlier in the day, but were well aware that the Iowa Rush would prove to be a very worthy opponent in their next matchup.  While they were again looking forward to competing against one of the better clubs in Iowa, they also knew that a win over the Rush would mark them as the winner of their Pool and confirm them a spot in the semi-finals on Sunday!  Both teams would provide for a high-quality style of play and a well played match on the soccer field.  The score would be kept tight throughout the game, with neither team developing a clear advantage over the other.  The difference in this game would prove to be an un-assisted goal off of Jared's foot from the corner, curving it in from the corner flag around the keeper in to the side netting!  The game finished in favor of the DSC Boys with a 3-2 result, and the boys would be playing in the semi-finals on Sunday!

Having gone 2-0 the previous day and locking up a place in the semis, their first game on Sunday was inconsequential in their standings, but meant alot to the boys in being able to prove that they belonged with the premier teams from across the state with a good showing against perennial powerhouse CRSA Black.  Despite both teams having locked up their playing pools, the effort on the field from both sides was second to none as both teams were playing for the right to be the best team on the field that day. DSC would hold the lead for the majority of the game, however goals were being exchanged at times at a rapid pace and it was anyone's game as the final minutes approached.  DSC held the 5-4 lead with seconds left in the game, when CRSA snuck in a ball to the corner of the net as the final whistle blew to end the game 5-5.  This was a great challenge for our boys, and they held up strong and now know that there is no one in the State that they can't compete against.

Once again, the State graciously would give our boys 6 hours between games before their semi-final game would be played against Cedar Valley.  With an intense game of Uno under their belt to kill time, Coach Steve did a fantastic job with his time management with the boys and got them back at it for their warm-ups with a great pre-game talk, building on their confidence and getting them ready to play again.  They came out with a good effort against a good CV team, and kept the score close throughout.  As the game neared the end, DSC would get a late goal to go up 3-2 and reality began to sit in with the boys that they were very close to playing in the finals!  The intensity picked up and they played a very smart last few minutes, holding on for the 3-2 win and moving on to the finals!!

As the boys briefly celebrated their last win, they would spend some time sitting and nursing their wounds, as DSC was the smallest squad there with only 2 subs, and 4 intense games in 2 days plus travel for most kids might of been starting to show a bit.  Still, they were in the championships of their first premier tournament and they were very excited to give VSA everything they had for the title!  Unfortunately, the championship game didn't go as planned as the DSC quickly turned into a MASH unit, but nonetheless everyone gave it their all!  Within 10 minutes of the game, 2 players were out of the game with injury, and another would be joining them 3 minutes later.  Only down 0-1 at the time, DSC would now have to play short a player against a very strong VSA team for the next 25 minutes, and VSA would capitalize in maintaining possession for most of the game, scoring periodically when they could while still showing class.

This was a great showing from our boys, and they are ready to continue their momentum into the outdoor season as they prepare for the 1st division IPSL as well as 2 top level GotSoccer tournaments this Spring.  Congratulations boys on a great tournament and we can't wait to see you take the field again!
